Welcome to Electrified, it's your host Dylan Loomis, quick shout out to my newest patrons, Mr. Graham R, Martin S and Jeffy. Thank you for choosing to support the channel. Just FYI, no video for me tomorrow on Friday, I have a funeral viewing and mass to attend and as such, we have some things to do so today's episode will be a bit shorter as well.
Electrified America is trying something new in San Francisco with an indoor charging station. This first one, a 20-plug site that opens on Friday. Their CEO said this is that big indoor premium experience that makes it enticing to say hey, I can do this reaching out to new EV owners in the San Francisco area that may not be able to charge at home. EA will have an attendant there staffed around the clock for security and to handle waiting queues and to answer questions from owners. These units will be up to 350 kilowatts and of course this will help people avoid the inclement weather. Here's a peak inside.
Now I'm not sure how scalable this model is going to be but for people in this neighborhood, there will be a lounge inside for owners to relax while they charge up.
The former chairman of Hyundai's National Dealer Council is saying that EV sales would benefit from more exposure at the main auto shows. He said some short-sighted OEMs that have dropped out of auto shows don't really appreciate the value they bring to not only the dealer body but the people that buy your cars. The Washington DC auto show is really focused on EV ride-in drives and I support those because people get a true appreciation for the experience. He said that one is a major show but it's still far behind those in Detroit, LA, New York and Chicago. He added, aside from the sustainability benefits, it's just a much better driving experience. Once a customer gets in an EV, there's little chance they'll go back to a combustion vehicle.
I shared that as the stage setter for this one, Kyle Connor sharing some pictures in a quick video of Tesla on display at the Chicago Auto Show. Remember, this is the first time Tesla makes an appearance at this show and yes, the Cybertruck is there as well. In 2023, the Chicago Auto Show welcomes more than 300,000 total attendees, 100,000 more than the previous year.
If you want to improve your ability to recall the most important information, there's a strategy that most people overlook. Studies have been done showing improved cognitive ability and concentration. A meta-analysis found that 90% of studies showed people who do this perform better across a range of academic subjects and develop a more powerful memory and become more creative. The strategy? Learning a new language. That's how I first found Babel, the sponsor of this video. I was looking to replace the apps on my phone that lead to doom scrolling in my downtime with ones that actually make my life better and make me a more well-rounded person. And yes, if I'm being honest, I know Ashley would love to go to Bonion Tree Cabo Marquez one day, so there's also that. Babel is slick because the lessons are designed by real language teachers and you get to live classes with your subscription. They offer a 20-day money back guarantee and this app has been proven to help you start speaking a new language in just three weeks. You can customize the lessons to suit any time constraints that you may have. Babel focuses on teaching real world conversations and they have these podcasts in the app that you can just pop on while you're doing whatever you do to pick up more on the language you're learning. So if you'd like to support the channel and more importantly your own cognitive function, you can get 60% off your Babel subscription using my link in the description below. Enjoy.
The Cybertruck is now in the mix for software updates and it recently got one new feature, improved ride and handling. Owners can now expect a more consistent response on different road surfaces and greater comfort on rough winding pavement in sport mode or when custom ride handling is set to focus. Also expect reduced pitch and body roll in off-road mode. No update for the turning radius yet and both the Cybertruck and the Model Y with 4680 cells are getting an update called more efficient charging. Those vehicles will now adjust to the power level of each DC charging station. This will preheat the battery more effectively so that charging can be more efficient. There have been complaints about the charging curve specifically with the 4680 Model Y. Hopefully this makes it a bit better. Cybertruck owners are getting some other new features with this update as well but most of them were from the holiday update that we've already been over.
Also in this update for select vehicles and phones with the proper hardware, this is not possible just with a software update. It'll now support ultra wide band, a wireless protocol that'll drastically improve how the Tesla phone key works. To actually use the UWB feature, you will have to set this up through the Tesla app. Drive Tesla Canada has confirmed the Model 3 Plus is supported as well as the 2023 Model S. The expectation is that all refreshed Model SNX vehicles will eventually get this update and the Cybertruck is expected to be supported as well. The first gen Model 3 and the current Model Y do not have ultra wide band support. For the mobile phone that you need, all iPhones since version 11 do have ultra wide band support. Tesla is focusing on iPhone support first but whenever Android rolls around at some point in the future, it's expected to be working with Android version 13 or later.
This job posting on the Tesla website was making its rounds and some people were saying that Tesla is now working on its own in-house VR headset. The position title? ARVR telemetry software engineer for the Tesla bot in Palo Alto. What to expect to facilitate this data collection we're building a state-of-the-art VR rig that can be used by our bot operators. This will allow them to seamlessly experience the world as the Tesla bot does and remotely operate the robot to perform complex and intricate tasks. You may remember this video from Tesla last year where we got a glimpse of this VR rig right here that Tesla has already been using now to control Optimus with that teleoperation. Just wanted to make it clear that at least for now I would not be expecting any VR headset from Tesla that you can buy as a customer. This for now is going to be something that they use in-house to actually train Optimus. This video was pretty entertaining it was shared last year but NASA also has a humanoid robot Valkyrie that is also operated with these VR controls. You can see this guy in the black in the back with the headset on and the controls in his hands. This is most likely a teleoperation system that uses VR technology.
If you've been around for a while you may recall back in 2018 Tesla was applying for a patent for an augmented reality application to make factory work easier specifically in Fremont. It was called augmented reality application for manufacturing and described a system that overlays data corresponding to features of an object of interest in AR glasses that could be used as safety glasses by workers. Back in 2016 Tesla also confirmed to using wearable tech to increase production efficiency. At the time APX Labs who was a partner of Google Glass had confirmed they signed Tesla as a client. Tesla did respond maybe playing the semantics game saying Tesla does not use glass hardware in the Tesla factory. Yet another product line that Tesla has been dabbling now with for a long time that most people are not familiar with AR and VR technology. Heinrich Zane shared a flyover of Gig and Nevada showing us this new area where we're going to have a separate dedicated factory for volume semi-production. We also heard about that other project that could potentially be that deal we just heard about where Tesla's buying that used equipment from CATL for LFP battery packs that we're hearing is for the megapack. Now yes if the other project here was indeed those LFP packs destined for megapack in laythrip Tesla would have to transport those cells down to laythrip but Tesla semi can definitely help with that.
This was a nice chart shared by AJ on X showing us the free cash flow 4.4.4 for each of these automakers with the number of vehicles they sold in the quarter. This line right here is the number of vehicles each company sold in the quarter in terms of thousands. Then we have Tesla generating the most free cash flow in the quarter over two billion dollars and the second closest competitor in terms of the company's listed was Nissan at 857 million while Tesla sold the fewest vehicles by far. Remember that free cash flow is the cash leftover after accounting for capital expenditures.
Tesla North America announced on X you can now wrap your Cybertruck Model 3 or Model Y in a clear or colored paint film 8 to choose from. This feature is now available at Santa Clara in the Bay Area and Costa Mesa in LA.
特斯拉北美地区宣布,您现在可以在圣克拉拉地区(湾区)和洛杉矶的科斯塔梅萨地区,给您的Cybertruck Model 3或Model Y车型涂上透明或有色的车身保护膜,供您选择8种颜色。
We got the Tesla China number 4 domestic sales for January it came in at 39,891 leaving us with 31,556 exports for the month. In terms of domestic sales this is the second only to April last year where it came in at 39.9000. It is important to note however when looking at the year over year comparison for this figure in January 2023 the Chinese New Year started on January 22nd whereas this year it starts February 10th. Still a good number just wanted everybody to be aware of that.
Tesla Roddy is reporting that Tesla has posted over 37 new jobs for Dojo most of which are actually in Palo Alto. A few are in Austin Texas and one is in Fort Collins Colorado. I would assume that sometime in quarter to this year Tesla starts posting job listings for Dojo in Buffalo for that $500 million project.
Model 3 plus deliveries are right around the corner for Canadians for the first time and at least some of these vehicles will actually be coming from Gigasang High. Transport Canada is saying Canadians will get both cars from Gigasang High and Fremont when it comes to the new Model 3. For now Model Y's are still coming from Fremont.
A Tesla owner just shared his story. I wanted to let you know if you own a Tesla you own possibly the safest car in the world. He was hydroplaning going 60, slammed into a guardrail on the driver's side then flipped down in an embankment. I got out of that vehicle pretty much without a scratch. Tesla's are not only beautiful but they're incredibly safe. Be blessed.
This is a storyline that we haven't really talked about too much but in short it's that dealers don't have the experience when it comes to their employees for answering customers questions at the dealerships on electric vehicles. Most dealership employees lack experience with EVs and their components and these dealers are struggling without any real methods to determine health of used EV batteries.
One used car director said, I still don't believe we have a consistent way to appraise and value an EV. There does not appear to be a tool that dealerships can purchase to appraise a wide range of batteries because remember when these dealerships get used vehicles coming in they'll have EVs from all different companies. Plus when they buy cars at auctions or from third parties or trade-ins when those cars are EVs they don't know what they're getting.
That's the extra set of concerns on the dealer side. It's both what am I getting and then also how do I explain what I have to shoppers. Plus I would guess that most of these dealers and their employees, especially if they don't own an electric vehicle, aren't constantly going to be up to date on what the latest software features are with all of these vehicles. We know Tesla is the most capable with software updates but over time these other companies are going to start pushing more and more updates OTA as well.
Most of these dealers and their employees are already apathetic when it comes to electric vehicles and all of the work required to get the dealerships knowledge on these new vehicles. Pair that apathy with a pretty tough situation honestly for these employees to figure out the latest and greatest not just in terms of battery health but the latest software updates. It really is a recipe for disaster.
Many consumers are intrigued by EVs but when they ask these questions to their dealers and the people answering the questions don't have the answers they instill no confidence for that consumer to actually go through with a buying decision.
GM has hired Kurt Kelty who will serve as GM's VP of batteries which is a new position. He'll be tasked with leading GM's overall approach to EV batteries including sourcing raw materials and investing in and commercializing battery technology. Creeping on Kurt's LinkedIn page he worked at Tesla as Senior Director of Battery Technology for over 11 years leaving in 2017. Most recently though he left C. Lenano where he spent over 6 years over 4 of which was as the VP of commercialization.
This is not at all a sponsored spot Arash doesn't even know I'm talking about this I just came across it on X and thought it looked like a pretty cool product hidden storage for your glasses or anything else really specifically for your Tesla vehicle. I'll have his link below.
If you get on the right side of change these companies will deliver super X financial growth. What does that mean? It means not only rapid growth sustained but an acceleration in growth for example Tesla is going through a lull right now related to the cycle but when autonomous taxi networks platforms kick in as we think they will within the next two years I will say then what we're talking about with Tesla is a re acceleration in growth and a huge increase in margins because Robotaxi platforms are SaaS models software as a service models. We have a lot of stories like that in our portfolio and they are highly misunderstood.
In a company that feels like some are starting to understand it less lately Kathy is of course Tesla it's not performing and it feels like everybody everywhere is going after Elon Musk all the time it is your second biggest holding are you holding on and how should investors view Tesla right now?
Yes well we report our trades every day and you will see that we have been buying Tesla. There is so much negative psychology in the stock right now around electric vehicles themselves which we think is misplaced we think electric vehicles are going to continue to gain share and really take over the market in the next five years EVs we think will be the bulk of the market in the next five years so and then beyond that Robotaxis are going to change the landscape entirely.
So our target price published target price which is going to change is roughly $2,000 the stock is a little below $200 so we're talking about a 10x in our base case and that's not even our goal case.
Rivian has temporarily paused all deliveries of the R1T and the R1S in Canada they're being canceled due to a software issue unknown when they're going to resume. There's no word of any United States deliveries being canceled so I would guess that this has something to do with a transport Canada regulation and hopefully Rivian can fix it with an OTA update.
Tesla stock closed today at $189.56 up 1.06% while the NASDAQ was up 0.24%. It was a very low volume day for Tesla stock trading about 28 million shares below the average 30 day volume.
