Welcome to Electrified. It's your host, Dylan Luminous. You've probably seen the headlines by now of Steve Wozniak calling Tesla a good example of AI trying to kill you, referring to Tesla's FSD beta. Do you talk to Elon Musk ever? I've never actually met him and spoke with him.
I admire some things that he's done for the world changing his towards electric cars, but you know, his real motivations inside this he really appears to be trying to clean the air and all that gets shadowed by a lot of other things. And he basically got a lot of money from myself. You for a car, I believe, things he said, that a car would drive itself across the country by the end of 2016. Oh, I had to upgrade to that model, you know, $50,000. And then it wouldn't do anything.
I could tell it wouldn't ever make it across the country. And he said, here we have a new one with eight cameras. It'll make it across the country by the end of 2017. I actually believe those things and it's not even close to reality. And boy, if you want to study of AI gone wrong and taking a lot of claims and trying to kill you every chance it can, get a Tesla. Wow. It pretty simply sounds like a disillusioned customer who is sneaking in some hyperbole.
Here it is, the upcoming big test for the Tesla semi at the run on less electric truck performance event. Run on less is something that we do every two years. It brings the best of the best in different aspects of trucking. Run on less has been an outstanding learning experience for the entire industry, not only drivers, but fleet managers as well. I think this went a great way to helping other people to see what's possible.
There's leaders, followers and those who wonder what happened. And then in 2021, bam, we did electric trucks and run on less electric. And how exciting that was to see 13 different electric truck brands at different fleets all across the US and Canada. As soon as I got in the electric truck, I realized this is the way the future. This is really the way it's going to go.
When Pepsi confirmed on Wednesday, it would enter at least one of the Tesla semis into the run on less event. The tech director at Pepsi said we're really excited to participate in the run and allow the industry to have access to the insights and the learnings that we're getting from experiencing these vehicles. We're going to run them hard. The Tesla semi will operate with a maximum payload and travel up to 500 miles roundtrip during the event. And she said we really want to demonstrate the capability of our team, the capability of the Tesla semi and the capability of the class 80 electric vehicle to compete with the ice counterparts.
Third party data tracking companies will be posting independent performance data on the events website. An industry director said getting Tesla into this is a big deal. Trucking companies, fleet managers will be looking at data for all the trucks in the event. Tesla will attract particular attention because it's a new entrant into the trucking sphere and has already disrupted the auto industry. This event runs for three weeks starting September 11th and then the public can check the data and slice different aspects cumulatively or by specific routes, dates and weather conditions. Any data on a class 8 EV that can be shared is a big deal because there are lots of questions about their performance. And a senior manager for mobility said there will be a lot of buzz about Tesla specifically. Other listed entrants so far, Nikola, Freightliner and Volvo. We know Tesla has been very tight lift when it comes to the Tesla semi so I really do think this will be a huge deal.
Honestly, seems like a very cool event. Their website will be linked below. Just a quick PSA I used to be in the fitness industry for about three years and ended up doing a ton of research while I was there. This is how I first found ritual and specifically their symbiotic plus which is a three in one pre pro and postbiotic. Transparency is core to ritual and their products are made traceable showing you every labeled ingredient, supplier and key study that go into their vegan friendly products.
And hear me on this, I don't take recommending supplements lightly but I also know that plenty of people are getting scammed looking for good options so I just want to cut down on that a bit. The 5 best selling gut health supplements don't actually have a postbiotic which is what helps support the gut barrier function and helps prevent things like leaky gut. Yes, ritual is the sponsor of this video but the specialist I'm working with right now has me on this as part of my protocol.

Tesla dropped this video showcasing the model S track package coming soon showing speeds of up to 322 kilometers per hour which yes is basically the model S plaid hitting its top speed of 200 miles per hour. And here's why that video went out when it did plenty of people have been waiting for Tesla's carbon ceramic brake kit to be available it was and it wasn't well it looks like Tesla has revamped and created an entire new package for 15 to 20 thousand dollars.
I'm not going to dive into the detail because I don't think this applies to a majority of the viewers here but this package will be available June 2023 and if you want some more info on what exactly is included I will of course have this posted below or go ahead and pause and read Tesla has also been giving some youtubers the ability to test out this track package and there are two YouTube videos reviewing itself I'll include both of these below.
Responding to meet Kevin talking about Ford and their EV business Elon said always tough with margins for new vehicle lines especially when there are major technology shifts. I think Ford's overall strategy with EVs is smart the electric F-150 lightning has high demand. Despite farly low key kind of coming at Tesla over the past two weeks Elon just nothing but praise for Ford at least publicly.
I think this is a great time to remind everybody what was said on the Q1 earnings call Tesla said we want all EVs to succeed we're not trying to destroy everybody. Elon said definitely not we're trying to be helpful here we're not out to destroy competitors or anything like that we're trying to help competitors frankly in any way we can it's all about the mission. Here's a solid chart with an update on industry wide operating profit margins so this is what people are now talking about when it comes to Tesla's valuation if you go to the end of quarter one you can see that Tesla at 11.4 has actually fallen below Mercedes at 13.4. Now of course these companies are not apples to apples comparisons Tesla is working on plenty of other projects where they're investing rapidly and that's of course going to hurt overall operating margins in the short term.
Just wanted to provide a quick update because there will be plenty of conversation about this metric and how Tesla's compares to the industry for the next six to 12 months. Let's take a quick stroll down memory lane go back summer of last year when BYD said it was going to supply Tesla with battery cells. At the time and executive at BYD said Tesla is a very successful company no matter what BYD respects Tesla and we admire them we're good friends with Elon and we will soon supply him with batteries we're friends this was after Tesla was testing BYD's new blade batteries.
Then August last year scene of finance reports the blade batteries supplied by BYD have actually been delivered to Tesla at gigaburlin around the same time Tesla mag says Tesla already has EU approval for a new model Y with a structural battery from BYD. At the time the word was the capacity of the BYD battery would be 55 kilowatt hours with a range of 440 kilometers or about 273 miles. It was around this time when BYD was in the news talking about their own structural pack what they were calling cell to body integration and here we are today Tesla mag saying Tesla has started production of this new model Y with those BYD batteries at gigaburlin.
This article refers to the new model Y as small that's just a translation error they're just referring to a base version of the model Y. Either way this data is coming from reliable sources it sounds like this new model Y is going to use both front and rear gigacast it's going to have a structural pack and of course use BYD batteries. Looking at the German configurator you can see the model Y rear wheel drive listed at 455 kilometers or 283 miles they're saying this is WLTP range which ordinarily is about 20% higher than the EPA so that would mean this from an EPA standpoint is only about 223 miles but that of course does not sound right so I don't know if something changed with the WLTP calculations and estimates over there if anybody's in the know let me know but it sounds like this listed range is going to be close to the EPA equivalent right around 282 miles for the base model Y.
So again I don't know if these reports are true I don't know if ordering this vehicle means you're going to get one of these BYD battery structural pack cars will definitely be watching and hopefully we get more concrete information in the weeks ahead.
Here's a good one for you so the White House is now saying Toyota is fully committed to electrifying its auto fleet. A White House senior advisor is saying I think they're going to stick with plug-in hybrids for a while maybe longer than some of the other companies but they're fully now committed under their new leadership to electrification but it sounds like the term electrification still includes plug-in hybrids and not full battery electric. Another White House advisor that recently sat down with Elon said Tesla is a key player they were the first ones out there they were very open and workable and they've been a great partner. Gotta pass along the White House Tesla praise whenever we get it.
We have Remax Energy subsidiary saying they'll be entering the battery energy storage market. Remax is in discussions with customers and some pilot operations they're looking for first installations in 2024 mass production 2025 looking to scale 210 gigawatt hours of annual production about a fourth of Tesla's laythrift facility.
Just a quick update from why Tricity one of the wireless EV charging companies they just said we hope to have vehicles with factory installed wireless charging in the United States and Europe in the next two or three years and yes this technology is already being deployed in China.
Here we have another Tesla stock note from Morgan Stanley surprise surprise but I share because it sounds like they're starting to get it we don't think government incentives like the credits IRA will materially change who leads or lags the EV market. It comes down to who is the lowest cost producer and who can fund itself at scale? Who does this sound like? Who can sell their EV to consumers who ascribe a utility value greater than the price paid while producing that EV at a cost lower than the price charged. As far as I can see right now the list of companies that Morgan Stanley was just describing basically Tesla and BYD that's about it.
