Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger a ‘very discourteous fellow,’ TSMC founder says

TSMC founder Morris Chang took aim at Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger on Tuesday calling him quote very discourteous. At a type 8 tech forum Chang shared his mixed reaction to an encounter with Gelsinger from five years ago. He also weighed in on Washington's plan to create a complete semiconductor supply chain saying that it would be expensive and perhaps impossible. TSMC founder Morris Chang and his wife Sophie Chang enter the venue hand in hand. The occasion is the 20th anniversary of the Montage Aid Science and Technology Association of Taiwan. Chang gave a talk on growth as a business leader.

台积电创始人张忠谋在周二对英特尔CEO帕特·基尔辛格进行了批评，称他“非常无礼”。在一次名为Type 8的技术论坛上，张忠谋分享了自己对五年前与基尔辛格一次会面时产生的复杂感受。他还对美国政府计划创建完整半导体供应链的计划发表了看法，认为这将花费昂贵且可能不切实际。当天，张忠谋与妻子张淑芬手牵手进入会场，该活动是为庆祝台湾蒙特志科研技术协会成立20周年。张忠谋作了一场关于作为企业领袖如何成长的演讲。

For the first time he spoke about the business strategy that he set for TSMC more than 23 years ago. It's been more than 20 years so now I can make it public. Back then it was a company secret. Chang revealed the goals he set for TSMC 23 years earlier. He intended for TSMC to gain a market edge through technical quality reliability and marketing. Over the years the only goal not met has been offering low prices.

他第一次谈到了23年前为台积电制定的商业战略。现在已经过去了20多年，所以我可以公开这一信息。当时这还是公司的一个秘密。张忠谋披露了他23年前为台积电设定的目标。他打算通过技术质量的可靠性和市场营销让台积电获得市场优势。这些年来，唯一没有实现的目标是提供低价。

At the forum Chang also spoke about his interactions with Pat Gelsinger CEO of Intel. I've met everyone of Intel CEOs including that fellow. Five years ago that fellow was already a bit cocky. Today he is very discourteous toward TSMC. I deal with him the way he deals with us. Chang revealed that five years ago Gelsinger was CEO of a company called VMware and had visited him in Taiwan.

在论坛上，张也谈到了他与英特尔首席执行官Pat Gelsinger的互动。他说：“我见过英特尔的每一位首席执行官，包括他。五年前，他就已经有些自大。如今，他对台积电非常不礼貌。我会用他对待我们的方式来对待他。”张透露，五年前，Gelsinger是VMware公司的首席执行官，并曾到台湾拜访过他。

Chang said Gelsinger had impressed him in the short space of 15 minutes. I asked him what kind of company VMware was because I really didn't know. In just 15 minutes he told me and explained VMware to me. He explained it very well. I thought this fellow is talented. Chang said Intel should not be underestimated but he said the US will have a hard time building its domestic supply chain for semiconductors.

张表示，葛辛格在短短15分钟内就给他留下了深刻印象。我问他VMware是怎样的公司，因为我真的不了解。而他在仅仅15分钟内就向我解释了清楚。他解释得非常好。我当时就觉得这个人很有才华。张还说，不能低估英特尔，但他认为美国在构建其本土半导体供应链方面会面临困难。

Not going to be possible to turn back the clock. And if you want to re-establish a complete supply chain, semiconductor supply chain in the United States you will not find that to be a possible task. That has been the case up until now and even more so now that is to say everyone once TSMC. Will this shortage end soon? I think they'll eventually be resolved in the end but I don't know when that will be.

Speaking at a TSMC Sports Day two years ago, Chang predicted that the company would gain global geo-strategic importance. Now retired, Chang is as confident as ever that the firm he founded will continue to be the bulwark of Taiwan's economy.

两年前，在台积电的运动会上，张忠谋曾预测该公司将在全球地缘战略中获得重要地位。如今已退休的张忠谋依然十分自信，他坚信自己创办的公司将继续成为台湾经济的支柱。
