The plan all along has been for Gigabrelin to make 4680 cells, but when they were about to then they switched that production over to Austin to take advantage of the production tax credits. This current expansion for Gigabrelin is set to go from half a million units of capacity per year up to 1 million, 2 million is not really in the plans yet. According to this map of the Gigabrelin expansion you have the current Gigafactory footprint right here, this other blue area is the battery factory and then this bigger blue area up here is supposed to be the expansion adding that additional half a million units of annual capacity. The word right now is that the Cybertruck will not support steam gaming, reason being it's only equipped with half of the requirements which are 16 gigs of RAM and 256 of storage.

According to Green the only the Cybertruck only has half of those requirements just like some of the early Model S and X vehicles with 8 gigs of RAM and 128 of storage. Green added the Cybertruck might not have a discrete GPU but he was unsure about that point. Back in 2022 when Elon was talking about steam gaming in the S and X, he was asked if a retrofit would be available for the earlier Model S and X vehicles that were not equipped to which he said yes and as far as we know that retrofit costs around $2,300. On one hand it's confusing because the Cybertruck has the biggest screen of any Tesla vehicles also with the highest resolution seemingly a great setup for gaming.

However we have to keep in mind that eventually Tesla still has a goal to sell the Cybertruck around $60,000 at a profit. I don't think most consumers are that concerned with having steam in their Cybertruck, sure it would be nice, maybe a retrofit will be an option but given that this is a hardware limitation, it seems like something not even Tesla can fix with an OTA update. I will admit this is one of those that piques my curiosity as to why Tesla is making this decision for a truck costing $100,000 with advanced tech seemingly everywhere to skimp out here is questionable.

Many of you will know I often say battery storage is not just for utility companies not just for residential but plenty of use cases in between. Here we have possibly the first United States shopping mall to deploy a battery storage project. This one is in New Jersey being paired with existing rooftop solar. This project is a test of sorts and they said the program will continue until the company has gathered enough info to verify the pilot and plan a further rollout. One more use case for battery storage back in 2022 Microsoft was testing out battery storage for a data center. Spoiler alert, it went well and Microsoft wants to replicate that battery project using lithium ion batteries. Impactful because we know there's huge and growing demand for data centers and why not clean up that energy consumption which people have been complaining about so use renewables and battery storage.

Good timing with this one as last week we were talking about how solving FSD and doing so efficiently are two different things. Now we have Bloomberg NEF doing some research saying that for an EV equipped with a level four highly automated self driving system up to 46% of its power consumption is down to the computer hardware. Naturally they concluded limiting the battery drain associated with highly automated computing hardware will be a key challenge for years to come. I agree this data seems insane that for level four driverless the computer power consumption is about 46% of overall consumption. Even more staggering when you would factor in Tesla's hardware for maybe consumes max around 100 watts so maybe 1% of the car's consumption. Yes I know technically Tesla's FSD is still level two but that's so Tesla does not have to take on any responsibility. But we know the actual functionality of Tesla's FSD in maybe 90% of the cases is more like a level four or level five.

At the Canadian Auto Show earlier this month where Tesla did have its full lineup it shattered an attendance record where 371.5 thousand people attended over 10 days. To be fair I'm not sure that 13.8 thousand extra attendees classifies as shattering the record but for whatever it's worth the previous record was 2019. Elon said on X Tesla Model Y receives the highest possible safety rating. The IIHS made two primary changes to their testing for 2024 making their standards a bit tougher. First was a tougher frontal crash test focused on the rear occupant protection and they also changed the requirements for nighttime pedestrian front crash prevention systems. They also said the barrier in the updated side impact test is closer to the weight of today's SUVs. It's closer to the ground and shorter than the original IIHS barrier but still higher than the NHTSA barrier.

A key distinction the IIHS is a non-profit organization that was really started and mainly funded by insurance companies which is good to keep in mind and then NHTSA is actually an agency of the federal government. So far there are only 22 cars total that have qualified for the top safety pick plus which is the highest you can get. Other EVs to do so the Hyundai IONX 6, the Genesis GV60 and the Hyundai Kona. Rivians R1s and R1T both got the top safety pick but not the plus. As for Tesla's other vehicles the Model 3 page on the IIHS website just says tested vehicle 2019 Model 3. The most recent thing on their website for the Model S was 2021 and there was nothing for the Model X.

In the Tesla app Tesla has a new assist beta it's basically just a chat it's not really a chat though you just type in your question and then it'll share some answers from the owner's manual or other helpful articles. So rather than digging through the owner's manual you can just type your question and then it'll most likely find the relevant information for you. Consumer reports put out their top 10 picks of 2024 most of you guys know how I feel about consumer reports so we're not going to spend much time here just so you know though the Model Y was one of their top 10 picks for the year. Consumer reports did say electric vehicles both hybrid and fully electric are becoming more desirable than their gasoline counterparts.

That interview with the executive VP of BYD was extended from yesterday and she said that BYD's plans to build a plant in Mexico should not be misconstrued as an intention to export into Tesla's domestic market the US. She did say her team is evaluating site candidates around Mexico City with a decision slated for the latter half of this year. She said BYD had a little interest in targeting US consumers as the upcoming factory would first and foremost serve Mexican customers looking to buy an EV or a hybrid. We're not planning to come to the United States when asked why she explained it's an interesting market but it's very complicated if you're talking about EVs.

She said if a company does not invest in EVs you are out you will die you have no future. If you're the winner in the most competitive market China why can't you win in other markets it's just about a timing issue. Ahead of the US election this year BYD's not going to come out and say hey we're planning on coming in the US market as she said it's all about timing. My guess is BYD continues setting up shop in Brazil and Mexico surrounding the perimeter they start serving those smaller EV markets then in one to three years depending on how the election shakes out this year maybe they actually try for their entry into the US.

Jim Farley posted on X saying it's here doing some testing and excited to share more info very soon sharing a picture of their new adapter for the Tesla charger. There was an article about Panasonic in one of their suppliers but what I wanted to focus on was in that article they said that the Kansas Panasonic site that is set to supply Tesla should go into operation March 2025 annual capacity of 30 gigawatt hours. They confirmed initially the production will be 2170 cells so as we just talked about hopefully when this cell supply comes online some variants of the model 3 could then re-qualify for IRA credits. In the article they also said Panasonic continues to have its site set primarily on North America to produce 2170 4 to 680 and apparently a new round cell format.

We've talked pretty extensively about Tesla's energy opportunity in India and it's good to see a meeting took place last week for the Indian government continuing to look for funding for around 4 gigawatt hours of battery storage paired with renewables. The government is trying to get things rolling on this front but so far the largest battery storage facility in India that is now online is only 120 megawatt hours. There's this new report going around from this consortium called Lead the Charge and their goal is to score the world's automakers on their EV supply chains. The leaderboard evaluates 18 of the world's leading automakers on their efforts to eliminate emissions, environmental harms and human rights violations from their supply chains. Results? US automakers are making the fastest progress led by Tesla who shot up in the rankings from number 9 to number 3 in one year, the biggest increase of all the automakers. This is only the second year for this leaderboard.

I'll have the links to the reports below if you want to dive into them but just so you know looking at their methodology they did say companies have been scored solely on publicly available official reporting which has received board level sign off. AKA this organization has no special insight into these supply chains they're just using publicly available information and then ranking and scoring it. For whatever it may be worth Ford took the number one spot up from number two last year Mercedes was number two down from number one last year and Tesla this year in third. Reports like this for me are always a bit sketchy I just wonder how the data is being massaged and manipulated because it really is so easy to do. Just one example of all of Ford's sales last year only about 3% were EV sales so with such a small supply chain for its EV sales relative to a company like Tesla it's much easier to navigate that small of a supply chain whereas Tesla needs much more supply from a variety of sources.

Today we got the news Apple is canceling a decade-long effort to build an electric car according to people with knowledge of the matter. Two executives told the roughly 2000 person staff that the project will begin winding down in that many employees on the team working on the car known as the Special Projects Group will be shifted to an AI division for generative AI. The Apple Car team also has several hundred hardware engineers and car designers it's possible that they'll be able to apply for jobs on other Apple teams there will be layoffs but it's unclear how many.

As I said on X this news really should come as a surprise to no one this project has been a mess from the start constant delays constant turnover constant questions about what they're even working on there was never a prototype there was never even an event to talk about any progress being made. I know Apple has plenty of cash and shirt maybe it makes sense to just try things and see what sticks as this is going to be a huge market. However with that said the level of hubris that Apple had on this one thinking that they were going to do what only Tesla can do was pretty wild for Apple to ever even think it was going to come to market with some breakthrough battery with this fully autonomous vehicle with very minimal driving data relative to Tesla's massive fleet of robots collecting data it just always seemed absurd to me and over the years we always got these comments of people saying it's next level talking about Apple's battery technology like the first time you saw the iPhone look I would have loved to see an Apple electric autonomous car don't get me wrong but I will not miss all of the articles like this hyping up a project that we never really learned anything about and to hurl salt in the apple wounds don't forget Elon tried to sell Tesla to Apple during model three's production hell back in 2017 but Tim Cook would not talk.

Elon said during the darkest days of the model three program I reached out to Tim Cook to discuss the possibility of Apple acquiring Tesla for one tenth of their current value he refused to take the meeting. Most of you are familiar with that narrative that all legacy OEMs and any EV startup is eventually going to be able to just copy Tesla and do what Tesla does even better than Tesla. Well I think after this news paired with all of the other news we've got over the past year I think it's time we can finally say that narrative is officially dead. Nobody is copying Tesla and yes BYD is doing massive numbers but we still don't really know how profitable their full B.E.B.s are half of their sales are still hybrids. Then on top of that if you take all of the government incentives behind BYD away it remains to be seen what their financials would look like.
