SpaceX has been making tremendous progress with Starship over the past year, and it looks like they will eventually reach Mars one day or another. They do have a couple of Moon projects such as the lunar starship and the dearMoon project. However, these are no doubt, not their main focus. This is a bit confusing as Nasa's main focus is getting to the moon first and establishing a lunar base before embarking on a crewed mars mission. Roscosmos previously tried to reach Mars before reaching the Moon, but this was not very successful. So, why is SpaceX trying to more or less skip the Moon? Well, the execution of a Martian mission and a Lunar mission is not too different. Moreover, going to the Moon first will not many of the issues that are unique to Mars such as landing on Mars and communication with earth.
