At this point, most economists agree that China will eventually surpass the US in terms of GDP. However, economics is not the only area in which China is trying to overtake the US. China is also trying to overtake the US in terms of rocket technology with their national space agency the CNSA. China has already accomplished several notable achievements from completing the first soft landing on the dark side of the moon to being the second country to successfully send a rover to Mars. So, it's not that far-fetched for the CNSA to overtake NASA within the next few decades by placing humans on Mars first.
