Ron and Gail Murray and their 4 children - Chelsea (22), Robert (20), Anthony (18) and Lesley (16) – dream of having a countryside weekend escape. The whole family enjoys the great outdoors, regularly going out hunting and riding horses.
They’ve just invested their life savings in a rural plot of land in Spiritwood, Saskatchewan. The site is stunning, miles away from the glare of big cities and a great place to watch the Northern Lights. Getting construction workers to the site to build a brand new home from scratch is too expensive. So they’ve been looking for the ideal dream second hand property to move onto this lot - for 5 years. Structural mover Wade Kerner has come to the rescue with the perfect 1700sqft, 3 bedroom, beautifully renovated house that the whole family will love.
With a newly built basement, the property could offer 6 bedrooms where each of their kids could have their own space for the weekend countryside getaways. It’s also perfect for Ron and Gail. It has big rooms, giant windows and a decked porch where they can enjoy a BBQ, the Saskatchewan sunset and the Northern Lights together.
The only problem is that this dream home lies 900 kilometers away in downtown Calgary, Alberta. Hauling the house – which is extremely long and wide - to the countryside lot will be an immense challenge.
The team will have their work cut out squeezing this super-wide load out of downtown Calgary without causing traffic chaos. They’ll have to clear power lines, traffic lights and road signs out of the way. Police may even force them to do this part of the move at night to prevent gridlock during the day, making it even tougher.
The task will get even more difficult as they ride out into the countryside. The team will have to guide the house across and underneath several bridges en route. They’ll also have to cross a working railroad line that sits at the bottom of a steep hill. Approach it too fast and a train could smash Ron and Gail’s dream
country cabin to pieces.
