Razan Zaitouneh made enemies on all sides of the Syrian war. The prominent lawyer was forcefully disappeared alongside her husband Wael Hamadeh and her colleagues Samira Khalil and Nazem Hamadi on the evening of December 9, 2013.
Their fate remains one of the greatest mysteries of Syria's uprising.
Eight years after the abduction, DW gathered evidence across several countries, spoke with dozens of witnesses with intimate knowledge of the case and tracked down the group most likely responsible for the disappearance of the 'Douma Four', as the abducted came to be known.
What emerges reveals a great deal about the fate of Syria's revolution and how its liberal movement was crushed by both sides of the conflict.
