The RAST conference held at Stanford, December 10-11, 2020 has a special focus on the role of financial reporting and disclosure and its impact on CSR (corporate social responsibility) and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) policies and actions.
The Impact of Carbon Disclosure Mandates on Emissions and Financial Operating Performance

Mandating the disclosure of carbon emissions as part of companies’ Environmental Social and Governance reporting has received increasing attention among scholars and policymakers. Stanford Professor Stefan Reichelstein discusses a UK carbon disclosure mandate for listed firms. His difference-in-differences design shows that firms affected by the mandate reduced their emissions by about 8% relative to a control group of European firms. He finds that the treated firms experienced no significant change in their gross margins, indicating that the increased transparency associated with the UK mandate appears to be another effective policy lever for reducing corporate carbon emissions.
