For Native Americans in the United States today, blood quantum is a standard measurement by which the amount of Native heritage a person possesses is ascertained. Blood quantum is a knife that cuts both ways: it enables preservation of tight ancestral lineage, yet it’s inevitable dilution is leading to the extinction of the Tribes. As sovereign nations, Tribes need to determine a solution to this troubling and existential issue.
