摘要

Listen as professor William P. Barnett and Stanford student Ingrid Ackermann host a discussion with professor Chris Field and assistant professor Morgan O’Neill to discuss the takeaways from an academic conference held at Stanford GSB on April 14-15, 2023. Actionable climate science is increasingly in demand by communities, governments and the private sector. In concert, improved observations, theoretical understanding, and numerical modeling increasingly highlight how significantly all parts of the climate system are coupled to societal activity. The interconnectedness between the ‘anthroposphere’ and the traditional realms of climate science (the atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, biosphere) requires climate scientists to engage with decision makers and stakeholders in a sustained two-way conversation. Climate forecasts are in high demand by industries whose behavior introduces significant uncertainty into those same forecasts. This conference brought together climate scientists and engineers from academia, government, and the private sector, as well as scholars who use climate science to inform policy and decision-making. A mix of talks and panels explored the spectrum of climate science from the theoretical to the practical, emphasizing the links between fundamental climate science and real-world implications for communities. We were particularly interested in exploring how climate scientists can help society navigate the rapidly changing baseline of a warming world. The Stanford Initiative on Business and Environmental Sustainability Research Conference Series is hosted by Stanford Graduate School of Business and the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. Season 1, episode 12, recorded April 27, 2023 #GSBsustainability #podcast
