Why Stalin Let the Korean War Happen - Explained

摘要

Korea had been ruled by Japan until the end of WWII, after which it was split in two halves. There was a Soviet and US dominated half. The agreement was to reunite them after a few years. Naturally this never happened and in 1950, North Korea - led by Kim Il-Sung - invaded South Korea - lead by Syngman Rhee - and started the 3-year Korean War. There’s a popular misconception that Stalin had no idea that Kim Il-Sung was about to invade. This is false - Stalin knows everything - but one thing a lot of people are confused about is why he was on board with it happening. In this video, we examine some of the incentives Stalin had in seeing the Korean War happen and how he brilliantly played the relationship between himself, Kim Il-Sung and Mao Zedong to the Soviet Union’s greatest benefit.
