In 1949 the Republic of China or Zhonghua Mingguo collapsed on the mainland. Over the span of seven years - 1948 to 1955 - many refugees fled the Chinese Communist Party as it consolidated control over the country.
Today, they make up 10% of the current population residing here. These people would be the waishengren, literally translated as "people from an outside province".
