Have Taiwanese University Degrees Been Devalued?

发布时间 2020-12-11 00:30:10    来源

摘要

Credit to my friend Jen for suggesting this topic. As with many Asian countries, Taiwanese society encourages people to go to college and beyond. Chinese and Confucian-influenced societies have repeatedly emphasized the prestige of an advanced degree. As the poet Wang Ju from the Sung Dynasty says, "To be a scholar is to be the top of society." What happens though, when higher education becomes universal? If everyone has a college degree in Taiwan, then does it really give you a leg up on everyone else? In this video, I want to talk a bit about the economic forces behind this degree devaluation and why it exists in the context of the large economic trends happening across the world today.
