What happened to the Tesla cobalt free battery? The Tesla and Glencore deal was not exactly expected as most in the Tesla community thought cobalt free batteries were right around the corner. Tesla and Glencore have had a relationship prior to this latest deal, but Tesla was able to lock in what we're assuming are better prices due to the financial position Glencore is in after a tough 2018 due to over supply of cobalt. Most of us are aware of the issues surrounding cobalt mining but things become even more intersting when looking at the relationship between Tesla and Glencore. From a bottom line standpoint, Tesla and Glencore make great business sense, but as Tesla outlined in their impact report, there are serious issues surrounding cobalt mining in the DRC and no matter how much Tesla cares about protecting human rights, the supply chain is far too complex to truly be managed.
