Haiti is currently in the throes of an unimaginable crisis. Its government has virtually lost all control, with 90% of the capital dominated by brutal gangs, while 40% of the population faces the dire threat of starvation. Today, Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, a fact that might lead you to believe it has always been steeped in poverty. However, this wasn't always the case. Once upon a time, Haiti was the most prosperous colony the world had ever seen. Its economy overshadowed the newly-founded United States and was more valuable than the combined New World holdings of the Spanish Empire. For a time, it was the most valuable piece of land on Earth – but this wealth came at a horrifying human cost. Haiti's prosperity was built on the backbone of an exceptionally violent and brutal form of slavery. This grim reality, however, paved the way for the largest and only successful slave revolt in history. As the second free nation in the Americas, Haiti overflowed with hope and optimism for a future shaped by and for its people. So, how did this once unimaginably wealthy land transform into a devastatingly impoverished nation?
