I’ve been reading so much about The Great Pyramid and the Giza Plateau as I've tried to track the movements, writings and discoveries of some of the more historic explorers.
From the Caliph Al Ma’mun of the 9th century to the Giovanni Batista Caviglia who explored Giza around 100 years later, one thing we are always told is that they were seeking treasure inside the pyramids, but I strongly believe this paints a very simplistic picture of these historic figures – as mere treasure hunters.
I’m sure some were ruled by riches, some I’m sure some were honest, inquisitive historians and archaeologists, wanting to explore the Great Pyramid to learn about its history and architecture, but looking through the history books, there was also another, less spoken about reason why antiquarians entered the pyramid – knowledge.
