The lost, sunken city of Thonis, also known as Heracleion, fell beneath the Mediterranean sea around 1,200 years ago. It is mentioned in a number of ancient texts but the existence of the city fell into myth and legend until the Year 1999, when divers stumbled upon the remains of this incredible underwater archaeological site.
Dubbed Egypt’s Atlantis by the experts, studies have been on-going since its discovery and we are only just beginning to learn about this incredible lost city.
Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities has announced this week a series of astonishing new discoveries including the remains of a large temple, as well as several shipwrecks from the 4th century BC, which were found to be full of precious artefacts including gold jewellery and coins.
