摘要

Another week and another piece of history has been re-written and it is thanks to an article on ancient-origins.net (linked below) that I found out about this latest discovery. Dr Guillermo de Anda, an underwater archaeologist and head of the Great Maya Aquifer Project, works on exploring and mapping sacred sinkholes in the Yucatan peninsula, and talking to Spanish newspaper Milenio, he says that the ancient city of Chichen Itza was not founded in 525 AD as the history books say, but around 100 AD, pushing its origins back more than 400 years. Many of you will have visited the site, but for those that are not familiar with it, Chichen Itza is located in south-central Yucatan State in Mexico, around 75 miles away from the modern city of Merida. This is a particularly arid part of Mexico and so the main source of water was from wells, which are formed by sinkholes in the underlying limestone. This is why they were viewed as sacred. Watch the video to learn more about this exciting new discovery! All images are taken from Google Images for educational purposes only.
