At 233 feet tall, the Leshan Giant Buddha is the largest pre-modern carved statue in the world. Its hair has 1,021 spiralled curls, it’s head is 48 feet in height, its fingers are 27 feet long and it has a whopping 18ft foot long nose.
Located next to the Lingyun Temple on Lingyun mountain near the city of Leshan in China at the confluence of three rivers – the Minjaing, the Dadu and the Qingyi, the statue was carved straight from the Cretaceous red sandstone, between 713 and 803 AD, during the Tang Dynasty.
It was built to face Mount Emei, with the river flowing at its feet and it truly is an incredible, enigmatic sight to behold. It is the largest and tallest stone Buddha statue in the world and, as stated, it is by far the tallest pre-modern statue in the world.
Its construction was led by a Chinese monk named Hai Tong because he hoped that the giant Buddha would calm the turbulent waters that plagued shipping vessels at this major river confluence.
