摘要

You’d be forgiven if you thought the stonework on the cover photo is from Cuszo, Sacsayhuaman or Machu Picchu because, yes, it is distinctly similar, but this photo is taken in the Western Cemetery of Giza, which is located directly west of the Great Pyramid. The photo in question comes from the Digital Giza archive from Harvard University, whose website is linked below, and it contains hundreds of photographs from the Western Cemetery. I learned that only a handful of the mastaba have this amazing interlocking style of stonework, which I found particularly strange and something worth investigating and making a video about. The craftsmanship and precision fitting of these irregular blocks is quite strange for what I’ve seen of Ancient Egyptian architure, almost alien to other well-known features of the Old Kingdom, including the pyramids. Yes there are other examples, but I think these, which are located in the shadow of the Great Pyramid, are the best I’ve seen in Egypt. They seem to be focussed around the tombs labelled G2100-I, which, together with the G2100-II annex that adjoins it, seems to display distinctly different stonework to other surrounding mastabas.
