摘要

Indigenous Australians are recognised by scientists to have arrived in Australia around 65,000 years ago but because of rising sea level, many of the most ancient sites are now underwater. But this week, there are reports of a discovery that is 7,000 year old site, now submerged along the continental shelf of northern Australia, which may mean that the ancient aboriginal artefacts and landscapes may well be preserved. If you follow my channel and others like it, you’ll know a bit about the history of the earth in the past 20,000 years and we know that the last ice age came to an end around 11,500 years ago, when the Younger Dryas cold event came to an end. At that time, the melting glaciers and rising sea level are estimated to have drowned 1/3 of Australia’s habitable land, which means there is potentially a treasure trove of archaeological sites to be found because of the countries long human history. Watch this short archaeology news update to learn more about the new discovery and also why the coastal archaeology of Australia is in danger of destruction as energy companies create projects without surveying what may lie beneath.
