摘要

An amazing discovery has been made at the summit of Cerro de Pena mountain in Mexico, which stands at a height of 6000 feet above sea level. Archaeologists have been exploring a site that contains previously unknown Zapotec ruins that date back to 2,500 years ago, providing an insight into this little-known but important culture of Mesoamerica. I say little-known because when discussing ancient Mexico, we often think of the Maya or the Aztecs, but the Zapotec civilisation was an indigenous pre-columbian civilisation that flourished between 700 BC and 1521 AD. It could be even older but the date range is based on dateable archaeological evidence. It was an important civilisation and the archaeological sit at the ancient city of Monte Alban has monumental buildings, ball courts, amazing tombs and grave goods have also been discovered, including finely worked jewellery. This lost city was one of the first major cities in Mesoamerica and so the Zapotec culture is something we should all know about in my opinion. The new discovery is an important one, dating back to the early times of this incredible culture. The area around Cerro de Pena mountain is rich in historic ruins and archaeological sites but this discovery is particularly interesting as it was made at the summit of the mountain, a site that can only be accessed along a rocky path – a two and a half hour climb! The archaeologists were amazed by what they found on the mountain top, which they describe as a ceremonial area, flanked by temples and the homes of the rulers of the Zapotec, which makes sense as they could look out over their lands and people.
