Were the Peruvian Stone Walls Vitrified / Melted During Construction? | Ancient Architects

摘要

The Peruvian polygonal stonewalls, said by academics to be created by the Inca but by many other researchers to be Pre-Inca, remain one of the world’s most incredible ancient mysteries. How they were built is a subject that will probably always be debated, from stacking one stone on top of another and rubbing it back and forth so it fits perfectly with the one below, to moulding the blocks with an acid, to a form of geopolymer concrete and so on. Many of us have an opinion whilst many of us concede that it is a real mystery. These interconnected blocks, known as polygonal masonry are often accompanied by the famous nubs and there is a thriving community of researchers interacting on Twitter daily about this phenomenon, again another mystery that I would love to be solved. Knubbed blocks and polygonal masonry is found across the world, spanning many continents and time periods and there does seem to be an ancient technique of stone building that has long been forgotten. The purpose of this video is to simply try and add something to the discussion that I hope people find worthwhile and it focuses on the Peruvian stone walls. We also know that a lot of blocks show signs of vitrification, having a glassy appearance, especially on joints and outer surfaces, which makes me wonder if the incredible joints and the nubs were fired and melted. The reason to think this is because I have been reading about the vitrified stones that make up the ancient Iron Age forts in Britain and Europe, with most examples found in Scotland. We see vitrified ramparts and stonewalls that have clearly been subjected to extreme heat with blocks fused together without any mortar. Some stones are partially melted and calcinated, other blocks have their edges firmly fused. If entire forts could be melted back in the Iron Age, did humans know the secret of melting and reforming stone? Could the technique have been harnessed and managed by the ancient Inca or Pre-Inca to build their astonishing stone structures? Watch the video to find out.
