摘要
Followers of Ancient Architects will know that the origins of the Sphinx has been a major focus in recent weeks but one specific subject I’ve not looked into enough concerns the legs.
All four are totally covered with masonry, seemingly thick masonry, making them look bigger and larger than what was ever originally intended.
On old black and white photographs you can see the masonry falling off in patches, revealing even older masonry underneath and so I wondered, is there even any bedrock at all? Are they completely constructed from masonry?
To get to the bottom of this mystery, I needed to turn my attention to the Lacau archive of historical photographs, taken during the 1920s when Emile Baraise excavated the Sphinx, our only real opportunity to see the Sphinx at least partially masonry-free.
According to the photographs and also the dissertation by Mark Lehner, there certainly is bedrock inside each of the four paws of the Sphinx, but looking at one picture in particular, as well as depictions of The Sphinx in the 18th Dynasty, and could the masonry on the forepaws of the Sphinx actually be concealing human hands?
