摘要

You may have seen this news story breaking over the weekend as an Old Kingdom temple and dozens of New Kingdom Egyptian coffins and mummies were discovered at Saqqara, as well as many other important finds. The discovery has been widely reported but often misreported in places so in this video I’ll try to explain exactly what has been discovered at the ancient necropolis of Saqqara. The Egyptian archaeological mission were working next to the pyramid of King Teti, the first king of the 6th dynasty who ruled Egypt in the Old Kingdom between approximately 2345 and 2333 BC. Once a smooth-sided pyramid, today Teti’s pyramid now resembles a small hill. The first major find by archaeologists was the lost funerary temple of Queen Neit or Nearit, wife of Teti, part of which had already been uncovered a few years before. This time, the full layout of the temple was traced and inside there were three mud-brick warehouses attached to the temple on the southeastern side, thought to have been built for provisions, offerings and tools of some kind. But it isn’t really the temple that is grabbing the headlines, but the later finds that were found nearby. The Egyptian archaeological mission in cooperation with the Ministry of Antiquities and the Zahi Hawass Centre at Bibliotheca Alexandrina, have announced a number of other treasures, most of which date back to the New Kingdom. Watch the video to see what's been unearthed and also to have a look around the site and find out more about this incredible ancient discovery.
