When researching ancient history you often stumble upon images that really get your attention, and the Royal Kurgan of eastern Crimea is a truly breathtaking example of burial mound from the 4th century BC. It’s located in present-day Kerch, which developed out of the ancient Greek town of Panticapaeum, part of the Bosporan Kingdom, which was founded by the Milesians; Miletus being the ancient Greek city of western Anatolia. There are close to 200 burial mounds in and around Kerch and the Royal Kurgan is located around 5 km northeast of the town centre, a beautiful piece of history as well as a major tourist attraction for the town. Royal Kurgan is 20 metres high and the perimeter of the base is 250 metres.
