Not many people will have heard of Los Organos, a site in the Province of Jaén, in Andalusia, southern Spain, which as well as displaying natural beauty, has some incredible examples of ancient cave paintings.
The cave paintings of Los Organos are situated in the Despenaperros National Park but there are dozens of rock art sites in the province.
Most are found in mountain areas, and only just over a year ago, in October 2020, authorities identified Los Organos as a site most in need of important conservation work.
The Mount of Los Organos is a prominent landmark and at its foot are a series of rocks shelters, both on the northern and southern slopes. Inside these rock shelters we find the amazing art.
On one vertical rock face, 1.5 metres above the ground, we can see, well, we used to be able to see, what experts call ocular bi-triangular anthropomorphs, with what looks like antennae and facial tattoos. They are drawn next to a schematic deer with large antlers.
It is one of the most famous pieces of post-Palaeolithic rock art in Spain and it was officially deemed a site of cultural interest back in the 1980s before becoming part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.
The conservation work at Los Organos was completed in December 2020 but now 12 months later, we are faced with a disgraceful act of vandalism. Watch the video to learn more.
