摘要
I first came across these bizarre-looking ancient statuettes in the British museum, terracotta figurines with a slender human body, sometimes with a suckling child, sometimes holding a staff or sceptre and sometimes with their hands on their abdomens, but they all had this bizarre reptilian elongated head.
These figurines generally date to the 5th millennium BC, created by the Ubaid Culture of Mesopotamia and, of course, they have been put forward as evidence for ancient aliens.
Their distinctive ‘coffee-bean’ eyes and elongated heads is why they are often referred to as ‘lizard figurines’. Bitumen was also used to show hair, crown or headdress and the decoration we see on the various examples may represent tattoos or jewellery.
They are visually captivating; nobody can deny that, but when I went to research what these statues actually were, I remember having to wade through so many ancient alien theories before actually finding something historical and helpful.
Of course there are no written sources from the Ubaid Period and the archaeological record for this time period, in this part of the world, is far from complete. In this video, I take a look at what experts call the 'ophidian terracotta figurines' of Southern Mesopotamia, found in cities from Ur, Uruk and Eridu, and I present a number of theories and hypotheses regarding what they may represent.
