Star Carr is one of the most breathtaking archaeological sites ever discovered. This Middle Stone Age or Mesolithic site in Yorkshire, England, dates back to between 11,300 and 10,500 years ago, meaning that at the time the ancient people of Anatolia were occupying and building sites like Karahan Tepe, the Ancient Britons were creating the likes of Star Carr.
11,000 years ago, Star Carr sat on the edge of a lake, a perfect place to built a camp or settlement in a post ice age world. It seems more substantial than a Palaeolithic campsite, yet less formalised than a Neolithic village.
The finds from this site are nothing short of amazing, being incredibly well preserved in peat and hence, they gave us a glimpse into how the people of Britain lived 11,000 years ago.
I believe more than 30 headdresses made from the red deer skulls and antlers, or frontlets as they are known, have been discovered, well worked, smoothed in places and also pierced or perforated. A handful of similar finds have been found across Europe but these examples at Star Carr are incredibly rare and numerous for one site – and that’s down to the incredible peat preservation.
In this video I take a look at what experts call these 'Shamanic Headdresses' as well as the Star Carr site as well, as we try to understand more about the post-Ice Age people of ancient Britain.
