We were ecstatic to have Stéphane Bancel, President and CEO of Moderna Therapeutics, join us as our speaker in the Other Side series. Under Bancel’s leadership, Moderna has become one of the fastest-growing companies in the biotech industry, raising more than $1.2 billion since 2011 to develop messenger RNA therapeutics. Much of Moderna’s unprecedented rate of growth while Bancel has been at the helm can be attributed to how the company has leveraged its novel platform technology, as well as its spinout ventures and partnerships with AstraZeneca, Merck and Alexion. Prior to Moderna, Bancel was the CEO of bioMérieux, a world leader in the diagnostics industry, where he was named #1 CEO in the Biotechnology sector according to the 2011 Thomson Reuters Pan European EXTEL Study.
As we dove into the other side of Bancel’s journey, we learned about the various roles he’s played since graduating from Harvard business: From managing manufacturing at Eli Lilly to serving as Senior Partner at Flagship Ventures. More importantly, we discovered the underlying motivations that have contributed to his ambitious belief and vision for making Moderna one of the most successful and impactful biotech companies in the world.
