Here is a summary of the Markets Weekly podcast, published on November 8, 2026 (with the episode recorded on November 7th), based strictly on the provided transcript: ### **Economic Data and Labour Market** * **Productivity Data:** Last week's productivity data was much stronger than expected. This may be AI bleeding into hard data. Big tech companies show productivity gains as revenue increases while headcounts decline. While AI increases overall wealth in terms of goods and services produced (such as instant research reports), the host cautions that not many people will make money off of it. * **Employment Data:** * JOLTS (job openings in the U.S.) was notably stronger than expected with a big jump, indicating increasing demand for labor. * The Non-Farm Payroll (NFP) report was strong across the board: headline job creation beat expectations, the unemployment rate declined to 4.1%, labor force participation increased, and wage growth accelerated. * The strong labor market means the Fed does not need to worry about its labor market mandate and only needs to focus on inflation, keeping it on track for a December hike despite recent market hiccups. ### **Political Shifts: The "Blue Revolution" and the End of MAGA** * **The Fall of the MAGA Movement:** The host declares the end of MAGA—the most influential political movement in the U.S. over the past decade that brought two terms of President Trump. The movement's consolidation into a "dictatorship-level" party with absolute loyalty to the President meant that all victories and subsequent defeats belonged to him. * **The Midterm Extinction-Level Event:** Last week's midterm elections resulted in a "Blue Revolution" and a total repudiation of the Trump era: * Democrats won both the Senate and the House. * The Senate map resulted in projected Democratic majorities, such as reaching 56 seats, alongside losses for Republicans in Texas, Kansas, and Mississippi. * State governorships and legislatures were swept by Democrats, including in Texas (Greg Abbott's previously safe seat), Georgia, and Nevada, wiping out a generation of Republican politicians. * The Senate map for 2028 is unfavorable to Republicans, making a decade of Democratic rule likely, a potential loss of the White House in 2028 (betting markets put a nearly 70% chance on Democrats taking it), and eventual turnover of the Supreme Court as older Republican-appointed justices (like Justice Thomas) retire. * **Reasons for Voter Backlash:** Voters felt the economy was not working for them due to high inflation hurting living standards. Key grievances included: * Presidential policy choices raising import prices (tariffs) and gas prices (the Iran war). * Perceptions of corruption, including the President's family becoming historically wealthy, selling faster subscriptions to Truth Social, unaddressed Epstein files despite a promise to "drain the swamp," and dissatisfaction with immigration enforcement. ### **Market Implications and Asset Prices** * **Data Centers and the AI Trade:** * The incoming Democratic control threatens the AI trade and data center build-outs. State-level Democratic governors and legislators in places like Texas and Georgia are proposing pauses, more regulation, investigations, environmental impact fees, and opposition to data centers due to electricity prices, noise, water contamination, and job displacement fears. * Fundamental reasons were already weighing on data centers, such as massive algorithmic improvements increasing the supply of tokens (estimated by Brandon Carl on *Benny and the Squirrel* at 13x token deflation a year), making the AI trade overbuilt. * Market reaction: Tech imploded last week, with the NASDAQ losing its 200-day moving average and the S&P 500 forming a double top and trending lower, though a severe crash is not expected immediately heading into the seasonably positive Christmas period. * **Oil Prices and Geopolitics:** * Oil prices imploded last week due to a higher likelihood of the Iran war ending. Senator Schumer (potential Senate Majority Leader) discussed defunding the war, and Vice President J.D. Vance publicly broke with the President on Twitter, blaming election losses on the Iran war. * Dissenting voices want to exit Iran, though some Israeli propagandists within the Republican Party argue for "finishing the job." Lower oil prices are expected to benefit the economy and lower inflation. * **Tariffs and Trade:** Broad U.S. support for ending the trade war with Canada (especially after losing border-state Senate seats in Michigan, Maine, and Susan Collins' seat in Maine) suggests some tariffs will come down. Lower oil prices, data center hurdles, and lower tariffs are all positive for lowering inflation. * **Bonds and Federal Reserve:** The host views these developments as very bullish for bonds. With affordability driving campaign messages and inflation coming down, Chair Walsh and a Democratic Congress may have more room to maneuver or even hike rates if necessary. * **Taxes and Wealth Distribution:** * Democratic governance favors redistribution (free healthcare, education, childcare) funded by higher taxes. * While wealth taxes failed in California, broader public support exists for higher corporate, capital gains, or ordinary income taxes. U.S. taxes are currently low relative to GDP and OECD peers (unlike highly taxed France). * While higher taxes may not severely impact economic growth, they will reduce corporate earnings and financial asset purchases, leading to a less case-shaped economy that is better for the median person but less favorable for asset prices. Green energy themes like solar may also come into focus. ### **Risks Moving Forward** * **Potential Escalation in Iran:** Highlighted as a danger by Professor Pape, Iran is choked economically and might escalate military targets to break the stalemate, given that they have effectively witnessed regime change in the U.S. * **Overall Outlook:** The host expects risk assets to grind lower, a rally in the bond market, and a watchful eye on potential Middle East flare-ups.

我相信,上周标志着MAGA(让美国再次伟大)时代的结束。
Hello, my friends. Today is November 7th, and this is Markets Weekly. All right, guys. So every now and then we have big turning points in history, and it looks like last week was one of them. Last week, I believe it was the end of MAGA. MAGA had been the most influential political movement in the US the past decade. It brought us two terms of President Trump, changed domestic politics, and of course, shook the global international order. And we already see some of the immediate implications with the implosion of the AI trade. But I think there's more to come because we're being set up for about a decade of Democrat rule.

And so before we talk about what that might mean for the US economy and asset prices, let's first start with the data last week, and then we'll talk about the Blue Revolution. So many people have been looking at the AI revolution and thinking that we should also have a productivity boom. After all, AI has been improving tremendously and can probably replace a lot of white collar jobs. So we should be having a lot of productivity gains. But so far, we haven't seen any until last week. Now, last week's productivity data was much stronger than expected, and that could be AI bleeding into the heart data.

We already see productivity gains in big tech companies where the revenue continues to increase even as their headcount declines, right? That's the very definition of productivity, having the same, having increased in output even as your inputs either don't change or decline. So the tech companies are AI native, so you'd expect to see productivity gains there before anywhere else. Productivity is the most important thing when it comes to living standards. However, I must caution everyone, that doesn't mean you're going to make money. So, for example, let's say that I want to know about hydroponics in Afghanistan in the 1980s, right? If I wanted to know about that, I could have AI compose a research report for me on the topic. I could get that instantly, and that would be real goods and services produced, and I would be wealthier because I get to have this piece of knowledge. However, I didn't pay anything for it.

So, again, separate the increased production in goods and services from the monetary side. I continue to believe that we will all be wealthier from AI, but not many people will make money off of it. Moving on to the employment data. Well, the week began with jolts, and jolts was notably stronger than expected. So, jolts is the number of job openings in the U.S., and it was a big jump, suggesting increasing demand for labor. Moving on to the NFP report. NFP was strong across the board. On a headline basis, many more jobs created than expected. The unemployment rate declined to 4.1%. Labor force participation increased, and wage growth accelerated. The labor market in the U.S. is strong.

And from a Fed perspective, that means they don't have to worry about their labor market mandate. They only have to worry about inflation, which remains too high. On track for a December hike, not withstanding the hiccup we got in the markets the past week. Okay, now we talk about the more interesting blue revolution. So, I've been following President Trump since he descended the staircase in Trump Tower in 2015 and announced his candidacy. At that time, he was really doing something truly revolutionary. He was against free trade and against illegal immigration. There was really no voice in either party at that time that supported those positions.

Now, that was a popular position for the working class in America. The working class had seen their jobs offshored during the era of free trade. And now, illegal immigrants coming across the border. And that's increased supply of low-skilled labor that was competing for them. So, pushing their wages lower, notwithstanding all the propaganda from the talking heads and the economists, right? Telling you that, oh, increasing amount of labor doesn't have an impact on wages. Well, obviously, the low-wage workers themselves felt differently. And that political position propelled him to take the nomination in the GOP and eventually defeat Hillary Clinton to become President of the United States in 2016.

Honestly, it was truly revolutionary because at that time, the Bush family and the Clinton family were the most prominent political dynasties in the United States. Of course, the president would go on to lose in 2020 and in many eyes kind of disgraced himself only to come back in 2024 and win the popular vote. Again, this is a beautiful Hollywood story if it only ended then. So, over the past couple of years, the president consolidated power within the Republican Party and it kind of became a dictatorship, right? If you watch the cabinet report, cabinet meetings, everyone is basically, oh, president, you're such a great guy, great leadership. Wow.

You know, it was like North Korea-level stuff. And so, he became the Republican Party. It was all about him. He made all the calls, shared the messaging, and everyone was just there to basically beg for his blessing. So, all the victory belonged to him, and now all the defeat belongs to him as well. So, last week's midterm elections, we've been talking about it for the past few weeks. The polls were suggesting the Democrats will win the Senate and the House, which they did, but honestly, some people describe it as an extinction-level event, and I think it was.

Now, just looking at the Senate, which was favorable to the Republicans at the time, lost Texas, lost Kansas, looks like you're going to lose Mississippi as well. So, at the end of the day, it looks like the Democrats will have 56 seats on the Senate, a majority, going one level lower, looking at the state governorships, lost Texas. I mean, that's Greg Abbott's seat, widely considered to be a very safe seat, but swept away, Georgia governorship, Nevada governorship, state legislators as well. So, that is, honestly, it's just basically wiped away a generation of Republican politicians.

So, why were the people so upset? The polling suggests that it's really simple. They did not feel that the economy was working for them. It was all about these kitchen table issues. And they seem to be unhappy with the economy because inflation remains too high, and that's really hurting their living standards. They're particularly mad at the president because, well, yeah, inflation is high in part because of his policy choices. So, tariffs, again, they were good rationale for that, try to reshore domestic industry, but that did raise the price of imports.

Year-round war, obviously raising the price of gas. So, they elected President Trump to make things more affordable, but he did the opposite. Of course, some other issues were, of course, a perception of corruption. The president's family did become even more wealthy, much more than any other presidential family over the past, you know, actually since the history of the United States. I mean, the president is even selling faster subscriptions to Truth Social to help traders and so forth. Yeah, that's just another level of stuff.

The Epstein files, he was hired to drain the swamp, didn't seem to do that. And there was also unhappiness with how immigration enforcement was done. Basically, a total repudiation of the Trump era. And that has really big implications because the Senate map in 2028 is not favorable to Republicans. So, it looks like the Republicans will lose the Senate for a decade. And if you're this unpopular right now, it looks like you'll probably lose the White House in 2028. The betting markets are saying that there's almost a 70% chance that the Democrats would take the White House.

If you take the White House and they take the Senate, well, you know, you're losing the Supreme Court as well. Right now, Republican-appointed justices have a majority on the Supreme Court, but many justices are old, like Justice Thomas. So, they're going to retire and they're probably going to be replaced by a Democrat president. So, it looks like the Republicans are going to lose all branches of the government and will have Democrat rule for the next decade.

Now, to be clear, this happens sometimes, like after the disaster of the Iraq war, you know, Republicans were in disarray, and it wasn't until Trump came along that they regroup. So, you know, political parties implode, go out into the wilderness, and then reconstitute themselves. Totally normal. But the implosion we saw last week was really, really historic. And so, that's immediately spilling over into asset prices.

So, a Democrat-controlled world, first, of course, first implication, of course, is that, you know, that AI bill that we've been talking about might not go forward as much as we expected. So, one of the things Democrats campaigned on was against data centers. A data center is very much an 80/20 issue. The people don't like data centers. It drives electricity prices up. Maybe it makes noises. Maybe it contaminates the water. And, of course, ultimately, it's going to replace them, to take their jobs. And, you know, President Trump was supportive of data centers.

Everyone else was not. And so, now that we have even -- so, on the state level, which is where a lot of the data center stuff is happening, you can see that a lot of the data centers were being built in Texas and in Georgia. And incoming Democratic governors and state legislators, they're not suggesting that, you know, everything's going to stop, but they're suggesting that we're going to pause for more regulation, more investigation, and so forth. Maybe they'll need more environmental impact fees or something like that.

So, at the very least, the data center build-out is going to be slower. Now, there were already fundamental reasons that we're arguing against the data center build-out. There's a good podcast by Brandon Carl on Benny and the Squirrel discussing how massive improvements in algorithms had really meant that we could have more tokens per unit of compute. So, basically, the supply of tokens has been increasing significantly. He suggests that maybe there's 13x token deflation a year now. And so, we were already on the cusp of, you know, the EI tree being shaky on the grounds of being overbuilt. And now we have, you know, more disruptions.

And so, last week, you can see the market beginning to price in more concern about the data center build-out. Tech really, really imploded. You have the NASDAQ losing the 200-day moving average and really just kind of having a really, really bad day on Thursday. The S&P 500 holding up a bit better, maintaining the 200-day moving average. But just looking at it, it really looks like we had a double top and are trending lower. It doesn't mean we're going to crash. I continue to believe that this will be kind of a process, right? I mean, look at the call speed. Went parabolic earlier in the year, declined by 40% in a month.

It kind of meandered for two months and then took the next late lower recently. So, my best guess is that's what's going to happen. We are heading into a seasonably positive time of the year, into Christmas. So, you know, don't think we're going to crash. But it does seem like the trend has changed. As the EI trade implodes, the market is going to have to sift through this and find a new narrative. So, that was one implication on asset prices. The other very clear implication is lower oil prices. If you look at the price of oil, also imploded last week.

Now, that is in large part because there is more of a chance that the Iran war is going to end. You had Senator Schumer, who may be Senate Majority Leader, talk about maybe defunding the war. But more importantly, you had Vice President J.D. Vance on Twitter publicly break with the president, blaming the loss on the Iran war. That tells you that there is more dissenting voices in the president's orbit wanting to get out of Iran. Now, to be clear, there are still people who say that, "Yes, it's because of the Iran war, but it's because we didn't finish the job."

Now, honestly, I have no idea what that means. I mean, that's like saying real Iran war has never been tried. But, I mean, is that nuclear war? Is that half a million invasion ground force? I mean, it's so stupid. I mean, these guys are basically Israeli propagandists, and no one believes them anymore. But still, more noise within the Republican Party that we got to get out of Iran. And so that's all suggesting that oil prices are going to come down, and maybe that would be good for the economy and would be good for inflation.

Looking ahead, of course, that also suggests that. Oh, one other thing. So, another popular theme, of course, was some resolution from the trade war, especially when it comes to Canada. Now, I think there's broad support in the U.S. that, you know, the U.S. should not be in a trade war with Canada. Canada is our friend, maybe against China, whatever, but, you know, against Canada, that's stupid. Especially when you're having an election in border states like Michigan and Maine, or the senators in those states did lose.

Even Susan Collins in Maine, who has been a long political survivor. So, it looks like some tariffs will come down as well. Now, lower oil prices, data center, you know, hiccups, lower tariffs, that's all positive for inflation, right? So, the strong political message that the public is sending is that affordability is a problem, and that's the winning campaign message. So, the political class is going to try to target that. That also gives the Fed more room to maneuver, more room to hike rates, if necessary.

Remember, the Fed is not accountable to the president. It's accountable to Congress. Now, we have a Democratic Congress, and honestly, Chair Walsh was always a hawk. So, maybe he will have more willingness to hike, maybe even hike too much, although that is not in the market at the moment. So, I think this is all very bullish for bonds, and inflation suggests to me it will come down. One other thing, when you look at this going forward, has to do with taxes.

So, the Democratic governance is very much a kind of basic, more redistribution model. So, we're going to give the people more free stuff, maybe healthcare, education, childcare, stuff like that. And their formula for praying for it, of course, is higher taxes. Now, the wealth tax in California failed, so that doesn't seem to have any public support. But higher taxes in the U.S., yes, I think there is broad public support for that. It could be higher corporate taxes. It could be higher capital gains taxes. It could be higher ordinary income taxes.

Taking a step back, looking at the U.S. compared to other countries, you can see that in the U.S., taxes are indeed relatively low, or taxes relative to GDP, on the low end of the OECD. On the high end, of course, there's France. France is very highly taxed. And keep in mind, though, even as they're highly taxed, even as they provide many free goods and services to the public, not free, paid for by the taxpayer goods and services to others, the people there continue to be very unhappy.

In any case, there is room for tax rates to go up in the U.S., and I don't think it's going to have a big impact on economic growth, but I think it will have a big impact on the financial markets. That's, of course, less earnings for companies. And honestly, when you have a lot of money, what you spend your money on is to buy financial assets. So when you have maybe less of a case-shaped economy, that suggests that there are few people buying stocks.

So it could be a better social model for the median person, but it doesn't seem like it's going to be good for asset prices. And that's something that we have to think about going forward. And there are many people who are betting on, say, more of the green energy stuff, solar and so forth, and maybe that will be a theme as well. So what we're looking at really is a big watershed moment in the country.

And I think the big winner is going to be the bond market, because, you know, all the things that were causing the Fed to hike, they're being reversed. And everyone understands now that affordability is a key campaign issue. Now, the one risk between now and the end of next year, end of this year, I think, is potential escalation in Iran.

I don't think that will happen. But, again, many, many smart people, like Professor Pape, continue to highlight this as a very dangerous time. It could be dangerous because maybe Iran will escalate. They are being choked economically, and maybe they can see that one way to break the stalemate, given that they've kind of done regime change in the U.S., would be to just further press their luck and maybe escalate on military targets. So that's something that people are afraid of at the moment.

So but going forward, though, I continue to think just grinding down lower in risk assets, rally in bond markets with a potential flare up in the Middle East. So let's see what happens definitely in an interesting time in the world. All right. So that's all I prepared for today. Thanks so much for tuning in. Talk to you guys next week.
