North Korea's alliance with China and Russia | DW Documentary

For decades, people have predicted the collapse of North Korea. Yet the Kim dynasty seems more entrenched than ever. Propaganda, military posturing and a nuclear program are shoring up Kim Jong Un's power, both domestically and internationally. This documentary traces North Korea's evolution from an isolated hereditary dictatorship to a state whose nuclear weapons program is cause for global concern. Today, the regime possesses missiles capable of potentially reaching long-range targets. Meanwhile, it is also seeking closer ties with key partners China and Russia. And for the first time, North Korea is deploying thousands of soldiers to fight alongside Russia in its war in Ukraine — a conspicuous move that provides the country combat experience, foreign currency, and access to new military technology. Drawing on new archival sources, exclusive analysis from experts and insights into North Korea's elaborate propaganda machine, this documentary shows how the regime fosters loyalty and cements its power. A cult of personality, shows of military strength and foreign policy successes all serve to maintain its power at home. This underscores why Kim Jong Un currently sees himself in a strategically advantageous position — and why Pyongyang's role on the international stage is becoming increasingly significant. Despite being a small, largely isolated country, North Korea regularly finds itself at the center of geopolitical tensions. Three generations of the Kim dynasty have created a system of government based on control, isolation and military strength. What strategies have allowed the Kim family to continue ruling to this day — and what are the consequences for the region and the world? #documentary #dwdocumentary #dwdocs ______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines.
