Sexual desire often feels like a spontaneous, almost uncontrollable sensation. A thought, a touch, a voice — and suddenly, the body and mind react. But arousal is less random than many people think! Lara, a student in Munich, is undergoing sex therapy coaching. Together with Dania Schiftan, a psychotherapist and clinical sexologist based in Zurich, she is exploring the nature of her sexual arousal. One thing becomes clear: many people's sexual desire is heavily shaped by conditioning. When certain patterns are repeated over and over, neural pathways become entrenched, while others atrophy. New stimuli or unfamiliar situations then have a hard time triggering arousal. But arousal pathways like these can be rewired. The brain is neuroplastic and therefore malleable. Methods such as conscious breathing, movement and mindfulness can help us perceive our own bodies in a more nuanced way — and thus also control desire and arousal more effectively. In addition to physical experiences, however, our desire is also shaped by social experiences. German stand-up comedian Hauke van Göns speaks publicly for the first time about his erectile dysfunction. In conversation with experts, he learns about the influence that role models and so-called "sex scripts" — that is, cultural narratives about how love is supposed to unfold — can have on our erotic experiences.
