摘要
In ancient times North Sinai was Egypt’s gateway to the Eastern Mediterranean World and the city of Pelusium occupied a strategic position on Egypt’s eastern frontier.
It was situated near the Mediterranean coast and the Nile Delta, a defensive stronghold and a key point of connection between the Egypt and its neighbouring regions.
It was the first line of defence against invasions from the east and was witness to many military campaigns and sieges, playing a critical role in the protection of Egypt from external threats.
It was one of Ancient Egypt’s most important military cities, but it was also a major trading centre. Flax, beer and other goods were exported from the city into neighbouring regions, but at Pelusium, exotic goods also entered the country.
It was culturally dynamic and diverse and due to its position and its purpose, archaeologists have noted various influences in the architecture and culture of the city.
For the past six years, an archaeological mission has been working at a site known today as Tell el-Farama, where a strange circular structure has been exposed for the first time in centuries. Watch this video to learn all about it.
