Why New Years resolutions fail so quickly:
The reality is that the excitement of something new wears off, and you’re left with the treachery of now sticking to something you might not fully be into. Maybe it was harder than you thought. Maybe you’re just not as into it as you once were. Maybe the great idea you had just doesn’t seem practical anymore or you got tired of it. And then it’s easy to cut yourself a little slack here and there. And then a little more slack. And then it slowly becomes a distant memory of something you wanted to do but never followed through with.
A study conducted in 2016 found that the factor that mattered the most in whether or not people kept their New Years resolution was…ENJOYMENT. In other words, if participants actually enjoyed what they were doing, they were more likely to stick to the goal. It also found that immediate rewards from these newly formed habits, no matter how small, kept participants more engaged and motivated.
So with that said, if you’ve found yourself with a goal but losing the motivation to continue…begin focusing on the habits to get there rather than the goal itself. Focus on what you could be doing every day, and make a list. Come up with your plan. And stick to it.
Creating habits takes patience and faith; the beginning is always the hardest part of the process. Many people give up before having created the habit, because they assume that the struggle will last forever - but it won’t. The struggle won’t last forever and making it past the first 6 weeks will be the hardest part of the entire journey - from there it just gets easier.
Perhaps the biggest reason we fall off our New Year’s Resolutions is that we forget the bigger picture. We forget what made us decide to try to change our lives. We accept short-term pleasure over long-term fulfillment. We take the easy route of “I’ll do it later, it’s not that important, I don’t feel like it” over “I have the potential to be this person one day.” Especially if one day seems like a long time away..it’s easy to put it off until tomorrow, since “I have plenty of time to catch up until then.”
Which brings me to Parkinson’s Law and why this is a concept all of us should be familiar with, and why this is so relevant. Parkinson’s Law states that: “Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.”
If you’ve ever worked a 9-5 job, you know that if you wanted, you could fill up the entire day with work and finish promptly by 5pm. But, if you were given the choice to leave at 1pm just so long as you got all of your work done…you could get your work done. You’d find a way. That’s Parkinson’s law. You will fill up the whatever allotted time you have to complete a task, whether it’s an hour, a day, or a week.
Parkinson’s Law should show you that we spend too much time procrastinating on tasks that can be accomplished at a much faster rate. A useful tactic is to shorten the duration you give yourself to accomplish a goal. If you’ve set yourself a month to do something, give yourself one or two weeks. We underestimate what we can do in the short term and just how much you can really make happen if you need to.
So if you’re one of those people who kinda forgot about your goals, let them slide, figured they weren’t that important…at least take the time to revisit them and see what you could be doing so you don’t end up as the 80% of people who don’t keep their New Years resolutions while browsing youtube and watching tai Lopez ads :)
