If you want one data point to keep in mind and share in the future, I would pick this one when considering the full cost of ownership over the course of a decade. A typical EV saves drivers roughly $30,000 or about $3,000 per year. Comparing an ID for to a Honda CRV, they said the average cost of gasoline to match the fuel savings of an EV would need to be $0.43 per gallon on average.

And that approach is unlike traditional automotive engineering which is really fractured. And if you were to go buy like a premium German electric car, the engineers who designed the drive inverter in that car, they did not work for that car company. They worked for a contractor. So in addition to the work that we've done in software and hardware, we've also done a lot of work in house on software. So this is the drive unit for Model 3 and Y. And if we take a cross section, we see the stator and the rotor and they're responsible for the core function of the drive unit, which is converting electricity into motion.

And our custom software lets us simulate the rotating magnetic field that is responsible for that conversion. And getting that simulation exactly right, it's central to the cost, the weight, the size, and even the sound of the drive unit. And that allows us to quickly iterate through millions of possible drive unit designs to find the best one. Our powertrain and our powertrain manufacturing equipment is both designed under one roof.

And that collaboration pushes us from day one to design products that are not only high performance, but are really easy to assemble. It's tough to contextualize this milestone, but knowing that these teams started from ground zero, and we're at one point trying to build a couple units per day to hitting 10 million cumulative is pretty awesome. Certainly some unsung heroes at these departments that don't get a lot of limelight, but play a huge role in Tesla hitting all of their efficiency metrics that we've come to know and love. A Reddit user leaked two photos of what we believe to be the Model Y Juniper refresh, which is supposedly coming sometime in 2025. There's at least a non zero percent chance this could be a different next gen vehicle.

But from what I see here, I would say it looks like the Model Y, however, going with this light bar on the rear that would be a differentiation from the Highland Model three. This is the only other image we get. You can see the interior ambient lighting. And if you look closely at the seat, it does look like it has ventilated seats. Everything else from the dash to the armrest looks pretty familiar, including some of this micro suede material. I believe this is technically Alcantara. And I do think there are differences between that and suede, but they do get used interchangeably, even if by mistake, perhaps there will be some significant distinctions for the Juniper refresh compared to the new Model three.

We bought our Model Y February of this year, but the plan all along has been to trade that in whenever the Model Y refresh is here and has AI five confirmed. We wanted to ride with hardware for roughly two years or so and Elon did just confirm that AI five is around 18 months away from high volume production. After a slight translation to Elon time, personally, I'm expecting AI five in the Model Y refresh to be here by the first half of 2026. Just so nobody is confused, I think the Model Y refresh does come in 2025, but initially it'll still be with hardware four.

I really was eager to get some confirmation that the Model Y refresh was not going to get lost in all of the chatter around the next gen platform and autonomy. You know, the same guy that called Tesla's Revolt a gimmick and a public relations victory only. Uber put out a new press release saying that they've partnered with BYD to bring 100,000 BYD EVs onto the Uber platform across global markets. It'll start first in Europe and Latin America. The partnership is expected to offer drivers access to best in class pricing and financing for BYD cars on the platform. And this partnership will expand to include markets across the Middle East, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The companies aim to bring down the TCO of EV ownership for Uber drivers, accelerating the uptake of EVs on the Uber platform. While Uber drivers are going electric five times faster than private car owners, driver surveys show the price of EVs and availability of financing remain the key barriers to switching. An important, quick aside, don't forget what Jim Farley said earlier this year.

EV adoption on Pro is actually going much better than we thought. They use the vehicles more intensely, so the operating costs on the energy side are much better than they thought. We can't make enough e-transits. Just another thought to keep in mind when people in your circle say, oh yeah, EV demand is slow. Don't forget you can bring up the commercial side with those talking points and also all of the police fleets. Last mile delivery, I think that all sets the stage for what the Tesla Semi will do because it really does just boil down to the unit economics. Back to Uber and BYD, the joint effort may also include discounts on charging, vehicle maintenance, or insurance, as well as those financing and lease offers. They also plan to collaborate on future BYD autonomous capable vehicles to be deployed on the Uber platform. Uber is well positioned to bring autonomous vehicle tech to a global audience at scale. Something to keep in mind when Tesla's time comes. They said many riders also tell us their first experience with an EV is on an Uber trip. I would expect Uber to continually do as much hedging as possible when it comes to finding an autonomous solution so that their model is not totally blown up when Tesla's robotaxi arrives.

But a BYD spokesperson said April of last year that fully autonomous driving is basically impossible and that the technology would be better applied to manufacturing. And to that, Elon said BYD needs to change course fast or there in trouble. The press released did not say which BYD models but some promotional materials showed the Seals sedan and SUV and the Ado3 SUV. Some people are reporting like this is going to be 100,000 BYD vehicles just instantly injected into the Uber fleet. But let's not forget they actually need drivers to buy these vehicles taking advantage of these better financing rates and deals. This one will play out over multiple years but given some of these regions we know that tariffs on Chinese made EVs are very popular right now so it'll be interesting to see what the adoption rate looks like for some of these Uber drivers when it comes to actually wanting to own and drive a BYD vehicle.

Remember this comes just more than one month after BYD announced plans to invest $13.8 billion in areas related to autonomous driving. This is a big differentiator for Tesla and BYD as many of BYD's EVs sold so far are not equipped with advanced driver assistance functions. And the word is that BYD has between 4 and 5,000 engineers specializing in autonomous driving. We don't have an exact number for Tesla but over the past few years the number of engineers working on autopilot or FSD has always been below 1000. Two years ago BYD announced a partnership with an autonomous vehicle company NURL that actually operates out of California to begin producing their third generation electric autonomous delivery vehicle.

This partnership was going to be BYD making these delivery vehicles and then NURL would apply the autonomous driving tech after the fact. Since then all we've heard is that NURL's current fleet of vehicles operating in California and Texas has traveled over 1 million miles autonomously and that NURL's electric motors and batteries are developed by BYD. NURL is also building facility in Nevada where it'll make its next gen vehicles. But on the passenger side for BYD we learned earlier this year that NVIDIA's next gen chips will enable increased levels of autonomous driving and other digital functions for BYD vehicles. Specifically drive Thor that's supposed to go into BYD vehicles next year.

All of that to say based on all of the available public information and what Elon has now said publicly it sounds like BYD has very little in terms of internal IP when it comes to autonomy. AKA they don't sound like a real threat when it comes to generalized autonomy anytime in the next few years. In the Chinese market for June plug-in vehicles hit 49.9% market share while full BEVs were at 28% of sales and year to date 43% of sales are plug-in and 25% are full BEV. In June of last year the plug-in share was 35% and 24% was full BEV. Plug-in hybrids are growing faster but hopefully in a few years some of the legacy OEM step-up and America can start doing numbers like this. Tesla released some new images of the Tesla semi so if you're interested I'll have the link to the full Tesla gallery below. We're still about 18 months away from some higher volume production at the new Tesla semi factory but I think we'll have some pleasant surprises along the way.

Ford's Blue Cruise is now available in 15 European countries making 17 total including the US and Canada. Customers can now go hands-free across 82,700 miles of highways across Europe. I won't read all of the markets this tech is now available in it's on the screen if you're interested but just a few. Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, and Sweden. There are currently more than 420,000 Blue Cruise equipped Ford and Lincoln vehicles on the road globally. Blue Cruise activation for Ford customers cost $2,100 for three years at time of order or vehicle purchase. But if you don't do it upfront you can get it for $800 per year or a monthly plan of $75. Farley did say that Blue Cruise profit margins are 70%.

A senior 4680 engineer at Tesla posted this picture officially announcing the dry cathode Cybertruck which I think is a good opportunity to quickly remind everyone of the benefits because I've seen many questions in the comments here and on Twitter about what this means for Tesla. Remember they still have to scale this new technology but right now things are very promising. But if you do scale it up yeah what what you saw before becomes this. Here's a better view. Here's what the wet process looks like and all of the serious iron that Tesla is going to be able to remove when they scale this up. These little representations right here to the left of this equipment these are humans to give you a size of the scale of all of this equipment. Step one they mix the powder with water and other solvents then they coat the foils then there's a solvent recovery then they dry the electrodes through these giant ovens and then there's a compression phase. So all of that what you just saw is removed and we're left with this for the dry electrode process and in this case for the cathode. And when you're looking at this you're like wow that's a lot of equipment for one step. This is serious serious iron involved in making batteries. Wouldn't it be great if we could skip that solvent step which is one of those dig a ditch and then fill it kind of things where you put the solvent in and then take it out and recycle it and just go straight to dry mix to coat. And that's what the dry process really is about. Hopefully it's clear this is a very big deal much less in terms of CapEx. It should lead to much faster manufacturing and it's likely to open the door for other energy density improvements in the future as well.

The Fed did hold rates steady today but they indicated inflation is getting closer to its target but they said more progress is needed before rate reductions can happen. That chatter aside though the Fed watch tool now has an 87.5% chance we get a 25 basis point cut at the September meeting which is 2.5% lower than it was just one week ago but that's because we now have a 12.5% chance that we get a 50 basis point cut which was up 2.8% from one week ago. Tesla stock closed the day at $232.07 up 4.24% while the NASDAQ was up 2.64% but how about Nvidia today up 12.8% which means today it added back $329 billion in value and before this move from the Nvidia highs it had erased $1 trillion in market cap since that high just one month ago so a trillion dollar fluctuation for Nvidia something to look forward to in Tesla's future.
