In the manufacturing sector, humanoid robots become viable once they can output a comparable amount of work to a human. This is significantly aided by their ability to work approximately four times as many hours per week. Consequently, even if a robot performs manual labor at only a quarter of a human's speed, it can still achieve parity with human output. If these robots can be purchased, operated, or subscribed to (for their software) at a cost equal to or below that of a human employee, they become economically sensible for businesses. For example, if a humanoid robot can perform the same or more work than an employee paid $100,000 annually in a factory, for the same or less cost per year, it becomes a "no-brainer" investment for the company, as it directly contributes to making more money.
However, the adoption in homes presents a different challenge. While an advanced humanoid robot could perform numerous useful tasks like cooking dinner, cleaning, taking out trash, and feeding pets, homes are not typically run like businesses. Household chores and labor within the home are generally not compensated. This makes it difficult to justify a $100,000 expenditure on a robot to save time at home, especially when compared to a company making the same investment to generate more profit.
Therefore, for humanoid robots to be financially viable and make sense in homes, their cost will need to decrease meaningfully. While it's anticipated that home adoption "will happen," the natural progression dictates that commercial (manufacturing) applications will come first, with home robotics following later once costs become more accessible.
